TUES. OCT 26-FRI OCT 29 Period 2 and 4

OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will use the Topic Selection Essay questions to guide their NHD research.

2. Students will begin writing their topic selection essay through research on each question.

3. Students will use easybib.com to maintain and share their bibliography with partners and staff.


TOPIC SELECTION ESSAY (DUE FRI NOV 19)


Write a 3-5 page research paper (12-point font, 1-inch margins) on your proposed topic choice that relates to the 2009-10 NHD Theme. This research paper will be called your topic selection essay.

Step One: Read this year’s theme reading and select your Innovation in History.

Step Two: Research and write topic selection essay.

1. What topic would you like to build a project about?

· What happened?

· When did it happen?

· Where did it happen?

· Who is credited for this debate or diplomacy?

2. What major impact and change in history did this topic have?

§ What was the problem your topic was attempting to solve?

§ Who agreed?

§ Who disagreed?

§ Was it a success, failure, or both?

§ What immediate effect on the country did it have?

§ What long-term change happened as a result of your topic?

§ Can we still see its legacy today?

Step Three: Prepare an annotated bibliography of 5-10 sources in MLA format.

Step Four: Hand essay in on time. Essay due on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19

Grading: This essay will be the first major examination grade of the second marking period in English, Social Studies, and Art History/Technology (if you have it).

Grading Rubric Based On Proper:

1. Length

2. Bibliography

3. Connection to Theme

4. Evidence and Use of Evidence

5. Analysis and Interpretation

6. Grammar/Mechanics


Assessment: Students are on task entire class period (engaged in research and writing). Students submit their notes and easybib references for the week via Google Docs by FRI. OCT 29

1. Choose a level between 4 and 9 on the right
2. Choose one of the American History stories
3. Press START to begin reading, and NEXT to turn pages
4. Click STOP when you are done Reading
5. Answer comprehension questions
6. In your email, copy and paste your reading rate (words per minute) and score %, and write the level and name of test you chose.
7. Repeat for 2 more tests (you may change level or type of test)
8. After you have copied the results and type of test 3 TIMES, email me your results.

Example
1. Level 6, History 1, 256 words per minute, 75%

2. Level 7, History 3, 399 wpm, 25%

3. Level 8, History 2, 144 wpm, 100%

2. Students will be able to use primary sources found during research to create and present projects.

Do Now: review NHD topics as well as missing assignments. Expectations for next class and NHD preparations.

Classwork:

1. Teacher presentation on easybib.com

Using your google or yahoo account to log in, set up an account on easybib to track your sources.

2. Primary source search for your topic using DIGITAL DATABASES (not wikipedia, google, etc).

USE the following databases to find AT LEAST 5 primary sources related to your NHD topic. Primary sources are FROM THAT TIME PERIOD

Homework: BY TUES. OCT 5, email me 3 ideas/topics you would like to work on for community service/service learning.
